Sangie Davis
Sangie Davis is an accomplished Artiste, Vocalist, Songwriter, Musician, Arranger and Producer. He has written classic Reggae hits such as “Wake up and live” on Bob Marley’s Survival Album; “Words”, a worldwide tune he wrote and sang on Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Upsetter Label in the 1970s and “Too Girlie Girlie” sung by Sofia George in the 1980s and subsequently reproduced in at least four languages.
Since the early charts of his two hit songs “Oh Ma, Oh Pa” and “Loving you” recorded in 1959 with the Melody Enchanters for Chris Blackwell’s Blue Beat Label, Sangie has collaborated with the most celebrated figures in reggae. In addition to “Wake up and live” by Bob Marley, “Words for Lee “Scratch” Perry, and “Girlie Girlie” by Sofia George, Sangie is the composer of such memorable hits as “Make ends meet” by Dennis Emanuel Brown, Let’s dance” by Judy Mowatt, “Where is the love” by Marcia Griffith, “No wey no better than yard” performed by Tinga Stewart (Jamaica Festival song of the year 1981), and many many more. Sangie continues to write and some of his most recent projects include “This feeling” featured on Luciano’s “Serious Time” album.
By 1979, Sangie was the A&R Director of Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Label, where as a producer, Songwriter and Musical Arranger he advanced the career of Nadine Sutherland and shaped that of Sofia George. Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s Sangie continued o his musical journey mostly as a senior member of the 12 Tribes of Israel Music Body internationally.
In 2001, Orthodox Recording & Publishing Company Ltd d/b/a Orthodox Muzik was launched with Sangie Davis as President. Since that time, he has overseen the production of five albums on the label including his own debut album “Words of my mouth” which was released on the summer of 2005. This album speaks for itself and there is much more to come from this great source.
